ABOUT THE SISTERS ESQUIVEL

How It All Started

The Sister Esquivel Foundation was born in July 2023, out of love, faith, and an unbreakable bond of sisterhood. When Griselda was diagnosed with Stage 3 endometrial cancer, her six sisters rallied around her with unwavering support. They, along with her husband, friends and church family, held her hand through the fear, the exhaustion, and the unknown, offering comfort, strength, and practical help every step of the way. Through this journey, they realized something profound: the battle against cancer is not just a physical fight. It’s an emotional and spiritual journey, one that no one should ever have to face alone. And yet, too many people do — without a support system to lift them up when they feel they can’t go on. Out of this realization, The Sister Esquivel Foundation was created. Our Mission: Ensuring no one struggles with cancer alone. We provide Real Help for the Other Part of the Fight — the part that often goes unseen. Beyond the medical treatments and doctor’s visits, we address the overlooked emotional, spiritual, and practical needs that arise during this battle. Whether it’s a comforting presence, financial assistance for essential items, or simply someone to listen with love and understanding, we stand in the gap.

Sisters Esquivel Foundation Needs Statement

Cancer patients in the Inland Empire face a dual crisis: battling the disease while navigating a complex healthcare system.
In Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties, many individuals lack the resources, knowledge, and support to access timely treatment. Los Angeles County reports approximately 41,000 new cancer diagnoses annually, while Orange County has the highest overall cancer incidence rate for individuals under 50, with pronounced increases in breast, colon, and lung cancers among this age group.
The urgency is real. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in California, and delays in care can be fatal. Without timely intervention and personal support, patients risk abandoning treatment, experiencing worsening health outcomes, or dying unnecessarily. Too many continue to suffer in silence, left without a path forward when they need it most.
Delayed or untreated cancer significantly increases the risk of death. A large meta-analysis published in The BMJ found that even a four-week delay in treatment increases mortality risk by 6% to 26%, depending on the cancer type and treatment. Observational studies confirm that untreated patients—particularly with cancers like prostate—experience significantly higher mortality rates. These statistics underscore the life-threatening consequences of inaccessible or delayed cancer care.
Early detection and intervention significantly increase cancer survival rates and reduce treatment costs. The World Health Organization confirms that diagnosing cancer early leads to better outcomes and lowers the financial burden of care. The five-year survival rate for stage I breast cancer exceeds 99%, highlighting the life-saving power of early diagnosis. Integrating early detection into healthcare systems is essential for improving patient outcomes and ensuring timely, effective treatment.
